Verizon iPhone 4 News by My iPhone Repair Santa Rosa, Ca.

The guys at My iPhone Repair have been following the news and gathering facts about the Verizon iPhone and have found some interesting stats to share with you:

Jonathan S. Geller who reports for BGR stated earlier this week
“We also have some statistics on who’s buying Verizon iPhones to share with you: 30% of people buying Verizon iPhones were Android users, just over 25% of people buying iPhone 4 were BlackBerry users, and only 14% of people buying the Verizon iPhone were AT&T iPhone owners,” Geller reports. “The remaining percent didn’t want to say, didn’t have a smartphone, or didn’t have a phone prior to making their iPhone 4 purchases last week.”

Very interesting facts! Android users are jumping ship to the world renowned iPhone! What do you have to say about that?

Let us hear your thoughts and opinions… Have you purchased a Verizon iPhone 4?

iPhone Repair News: iPhone Repair industry awaiting Verizon iPhone Parts

leave a comment »

According to the My iPhone Repair CEO, the Verizon iPhone 4 surprisingly has many significant differences over the AT&T model which changes the iPhone 4 repair process for us all – at least for the mean time until the Verizon parts become available.

The biggest change that affects the iPhone repair industry is the change in design of the LCD/Digitizer assembly – the most common iPhone repair. Apple has moved the mounting tabs of the display assembly thus making the assemblys specific to each model. Bottom line – ATT iPhone screen assemblys are NOT interchangeable with the Verizon iPhone.

So what else has changed?
The vibrator mechanism is a completely different component with the Verizon iPhone 4. It is no longer situated on the top right of the frame, rather it has been moved to the bottom left of the iPhone next to the motherboard. It seems to vibrate a little softer but is just as functional as the At&t model.

One of the most interesting facts of the iPhone 4 is that the chipset inside (Qualcomm MDM6600 chip) supports both GSM and CDMA! Meaning the iPhone 4 could have been built to support AT&T’s GSM network as well as Verizons CDMA network, but the lack of a sim tray and sim reader rules out any possible modification to make this happen. On the bright side this is a sign of future iPhone, possibly the iPhone 5 with both GSM and CDMA capability.

The battery terminal has been changed and the battery also has a new model number (616-0520). Otherwise it appears to have the same capacity.

The logic board includes the following modules:
– Apple A4 Processor (same as the AT&T model)
– Toshiba TH58NVG7D2FLA89 16 GB NAND Flash
– Cirrus Logic CLI1495B0 Audio Codec (38S0589)
– Texas Instruments Touchscreen controller (343S0499)
– Qualcomm MDM6600 CDMA/GSM chip (different than the At&t model)

All in all for the iPhone repair industry and for those doing iPhone repairs from home these changes mean one thing:

You must purchase specific replacement parts that match with either your Verizon or At&t iPhone.
Do not make the mistake of buying At&t parts for your Verizon iPhone repair!
But if you do – call us we may be interested in taking those parts off your hands!

Best Regards!

iPhone Jailbreaking Now Officially Legal

leave a comment »

Fantastic news today from the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). After a lot of hard work and mountains of paperwork, jailbreaking the iPhone is now explicitly a permitted fair use under the DMCA!

The first of EFF’s three successful requests clarifies the legality of cell phone “jailbreaking” — software modifications that liberate iPhones and other handsets to run applications from sources other than those approved by the phone maker. More than a million iPhone owners are said to have “jailbroken” their handsets in order to change wireless providers or use applications obtained from sources other than Apple’s own iTunes “App Store,” and many more have expressed a desire to do so. But the threat of DMCA liability had previously endangered these customers and alternate applications stores.

In its reasoning in favor of EFF’s jailbreaking exemption, the Copyright Office rejected Apple’s claim that copyright law prevents people from installing unapproved programs on iPhones: “When one jailbreaks a smartphone in order to make the operating system on that phone interoperable with an independently created application that has not been approved by the maker of the smartphone or the maker of its operating system, the modifications that are made purely for the purpose of such interoperability are fair uses.”

The EFF also successfully renewed the existing DMCA exception for carrier unlocking. More on the ruling by the Library of Congress is here and here (and many other places, since this is huge news!). The full ruling is here, and EFF’s history with this case is here (EFF’s servers are understandably getting hammered today!).

This doesn’t mean that Apple will stop their technical attempts to thwart jailbreaking, but it does mean that our iPhone jailbreak and iPhone unlock services are now unambiguously legal under the DMCA.

iPhone 4 – To Buy or Not To Buy?

leave a comment »

Many of our customers have been asking us a question that has been flooding the internet, “Should I buy the iPhone 4 or keep my current iPhone?”

Overall – we suggest holding off on purchasing the iPhone 4. Heres why.

First off let’s look at all the reported issues we are aware of:

1.screen discoloration,  reversed volume buttons, stubborn cameras and scratched glass?

Yellow Blotches or Bars on the Screen

Do you want an LCD screen with blemishes, yellow spots or bars on the screen?

Rear-Facing Camera Doesn’t Work

To put it bluntly – many iPhone 4 users are complaining their rear camera simply does not work.

Volume Buttons Upside Down

Maybe a little trick Apple did to protect your hearing? Some users have experienced buttons that instead of turning the volume up, they turn the volume down and vice versa? Can you live with this?

Glass is Easily Scratched

Even though the iPhone 4 is supposed to have a stronger glass digitizer – we have seen a very high amount of glass repair orders for this device which has been in the market for less than a month!

And Last but not least

RECEPTION ISSUES

iPhone 4 Repair Hold Different

If all the above issues are not reason enough to steer away from the iPhone 4 purchase, then this should be the deal breaker.

Many iPhone 4 users have experienced reception issues while holding the iPhone 4 in the palm of their hand. Cnet.com has a full video review that shows exactly what happens when covering a certain area on the left hand side of the phone.

iPhone Recall in the works?

Friday 7-16-2010 Apple will be holding a press conference at 10AM Pacific time and they may be announcing a recall that will cost Apple 1.5 Billion dollars!

Bottom Line – AVOID the iPhone 4 for the Time Being!

Although we at My iPhone Repair are Apple enthusiasts, we suggest holding off on your iPhone 4 purchase!
